How we Consult SEN Pupils

Consultation with Children and Young People with SEND

Teachers/SENCO and Support Staff will work with children and young people to identify the support needed to meet agreed outcomes. The provision is planned and interventions are allocated to individual needs.

The children take an active role with setting their targets, discussing them with the class teacher/SENCO. The children have regular meetings with support staff to discuss their progress and support.

For children who are on the SEN register we write and update Support Plans at the beginning of each term. In the Autumn term the Support Plan is written based on discussions with the previous class teacher, and the SENCO as well as parents. During the Spring term the Support Plans are reviewed with the child, parents, the class teacher and the SENCO. Copies of the Support Plan are sent out to parents.

For those children with a statement or an EHCP their progress is monitored as other children but we also host annual review meetings where we invite any outside agencies that are involved with the child as well as parents.

 

As the child is the main focus in this meeting we make sure we hold child centred reviews. This allows us to discuss any concerns or issues people may have and helps to monitor the progress of the statemented children.

 

Consultation with parents and carers of children and young people with SEND

We are committed to working with parents and carers to identify their child’s needs and support. Parents and carers will be involved throughout the process.

There is a range of ways this can be done, for example:

  • Termly parents/ carers evenings;

  • Ongoing discussions with a class teacher and/or SENCO;

  • An ‘open-door’ policy, where parents and carers are welcome to come into school to discuss any concerns they may have;

  • Through a review of a child’s SEN Support Plan or the Annual Review of their Statement of SEN or EHC Plan.

The school welcomes parents into school to discuss any concerns they may have about their child as well as to work alongside staff in the classroom. This may involve working with the children in a variety of ways e.g. reading, craftwork etc. Parents are also encouraged to help their child read at home and support them with their homework. Home school diaries are also used with some pupils to ensure effective communication with parents and school.

We believe that parents / carers hold key information and have a critical role to play in their children’s education. They have unique strengths, knowledge, and experience to contribute to the shared view of a child’s needs and the best way of supporting them and this information is invaluable. The school also has involvement with the Parent Partnership Service and also the Educational Psychologist is likely to have discussion with parents.

We also organise:

  • Watch Me Learn afternoons – where parents can come into the classroom and work alongside their children

  • Special interest days e.g. Art, Maths Days

  • Coffee mornings

  • Fundraising events
